Sights and Happenings in Berlin Germany

With a 2006 population of 3.4 million and situated on the River Spree, Berlin is Germany's Capital and largest city. Ever since the 13th century, Berlin has been the center of things in Germany, through many empires including the Kingdom of Prussia, the German Empire, the Weimar Republic and the Third Reich.

Berlin is a city rich in culture, media, science and politics. Upon reunification in 1990, Berlin became the capital of unified Germany. In 1991 the West German parliament voted to move the West German capital of Bonn to Berlin, and finally in 1999 the German parliament was fully situated in Berlin.

Berlin is the home to no less than 153 museums, which cover a wide array of subjects from ancient Egypt to Indian art to the Berlin Wall Memorial to Jewish Culture. Be sure to visit Museum Island, which was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here you'll find a treasure trove of archaeological collections and art of the 19th century.

One of Berlin's most notable structures is the Reichstag Building, which is the seat of the German Parliament and was constructed between 1884 and 1890. A glass dome was recently added in 1999 where visitors can go to enjoy magnificent views of the city. Other architectural structures worth seeing include the Brandenburg Gate and the rebuilt Schloss Charlottenburg.

Berlin is also renowned as an art Mecca, featuring hundreds of art galleries. The annual art forum is an international contemporary art display. Hackescher Markt is the center for culture and fashion, with a plethora of clothing outlets, bars, clubs and galleries. There is barely a rival for Berlin's nightlife which features a vibrant nightlife and club scene.

The city is also known for its festivals, including the PopKomm, Myfest and of course the prestigious Berlin film Festival.
