IJ Hallen in the north of Amsterdam is a massive flea market. Check the internet for opening days but be sure to visit if you have the rummaging bug. Take the free ferry across the IJ to the market where there is a small admission fee but it's worth it for the chance to delve into the hordes of objects on sale. Antique furniture sits alongside paintings and battered guitars. You never know you might find that missing Van Gogh!
If you like shopping to be more sedate but still like to find a second hand bargain head for Spiegelgracht and Nieuwe Spiegelstraat which are in the city centre near the Rijksmuseum. At the other end of the spectrum the Waterlooplein Markt will give you a good choice of amusing T-shirts and you may be lucky enough to grab a bargain from an up and coming designer before they make it.

Foodies will delight in the food markets in Amsterdam. One that is well worth a mention is the Albert Cuyp Markt which offers fare from all the corners of the earth and is an evocative mixture of foods that you will not be able to resist. The mini fridge in your city hotel in Amsterdam will soon be full to the brim with your finds. For traditional Dutch food the market to visit is Noordermarkt where farmers from all over the Netherlands sell their organic produce at reasonable prices.
